The Data

According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, in 2019, out of all the South Dakota drivers, only 12% of drivers ended up injured in a car accident. Additionally, a mere 0.2% of drivers were killed as a result of an accident.

During 2019, there were a total of 32,848 car accidents in South Dakota. Crashes are more likely to occur during certain times of the day. Most car accidents tend to occur around 6:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

Additionally, people are more likely to be involved in car accidents on certain days of the week. The most car accidents occurred on Fridays, totaling 3,574 crashes, followed by a tie between Tuesday and Wednesday, both with 3,072 wrecks.

Certain counties experience car accidents more often than others. Across the state, car accidents were most prevalent in Minnehaha county, with a total of 6,721 crashes.

The type of vehicle that experienced the highest rate of accidents was the car, with a total of 12,121 wrecks. SUVs were next, with a total of 9,463 crashes, followed by trucks with a total of 6,357 accidents.

The majority of collisions occurred with other vehicles, coming to a total of 64.5% of all crashes. The next largest crash category is with animals, coming to a total of 15.9% of all collisions.

Most accidents happened on city streets and alleys, followed by US/state highways, then interstates, then unknown roadways, and finally ramps.

The majority of crashes occurred on dry roads, under normal conditions. Next, the following road conditions are listed in order of prevalence, with the highest first:

  • Snow
  • Wet
  • Ice
  • Slush
  • Sand, mud, dirt, and gravel
  • Unknown
  • Frost
  • Water

More males were involved in car crashes than women. Male drivers were involved in 58% of accidents, while females were involved in 42%.

The age group involved in accidents the most often were drivers ages 20-44, followed by 45-64, then 0-19, next 65+, and lastly, unknown ages.
